Battelle is seeking a Senior Technical Writer/Editor to support a broad Research, Development, Test & Evaluation (RDT&E) team. The Technical Writer/Editor will be responsible for generating research documents, proposals, products, or concepts to be documented and easily understood by a broad audience. The successful applicant will develop required documentation as well as review/edit documentation developed by others. The ability to develop and maintain collaborative relationships with customers and within the team is essential. This position will primarily support work on-site at Tyndall Air Force Base, near Panama City, FL but will also provide reach back support across the Advanced Materials and Energetics Division.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Writes, rewrites, and/or edits documentation, communication, and reference materials used for a variety of purposes for research and development for the Division and Business Line. Organizes or restructures documents to meet information dissemination goals. Integrates text and graphic elements to meet document design goals. Verifies proper use of references, secondary sources, and ancillary materials to ensure compliance with applicable provisions of copyright law.
  • May interview subject matter experts to gather additional technical detail to clarify and supplement reports, presentations, and proposals.
  • Advises staff in planning and organizing information, visual presentations, or graphic illustrations. Provides a high degree of quality assurance by reading documents objectively and closely for structure, coherence, logic, tone, and style and ensuring end products meet customer requirements.
  • Acts in place of potential audience members to ensure that documents achieve their rhetorical and contractual goals. Ensures that written product communicates information in a clear and appropriate manner meeting customer expectations. Takes a lead role within the group.
  • Works with PMs and Principle Investigators to build project schedules and requirements, plans document production cycle.
  • Oversees the creation of written material packages and provides coordination between the publication/proposal center staff and the research group.
  • May assist in the direction and training of less experienced staff.

 

THE FOLLOWING IS REQUIRED

  • Bachelor’s degree in English, Journalism, Communication or in a technical field; five years of experience as a writer/editor of technical publications; or an equivalent combination of education and or experience in a related field.
  • Experience working under pressure with deadlines is critical.
  • Must have excellent grammatical and rhetorical skills and be familiar with a broad range of communication techniques and styles.
  • Ability to adapt to changing document specifications and ability to manage a multi-author/multi-reviewer publication cooperatively are vital.
  • A high level of computer literacy is required; familiarity with a variety of applications, including Microsoft products, is necessary.
  • Requires knowledge and understanding of the documentation cycle, including layout, graphic design, and web design.
